So, after some deliberation I've decided that the bit of extra money I mysteriously have this month (my account isn't empty and it's almost payday, what is this nonsense?)... will go towards a haircut. Because I haven't had a haircut since like, last June, and my hair is, unfortunately, going a little warrior-princess on me. The ends won't sit flat, it's being kind of bushy (and it's NEVER done that), it doesn't move anymore (it's developed some sort of hive mind, the purpose of which is largely to splay itself onto the hood of my jacket and stay very still (even in the Chicago wind! I have thin thin thin hair and it just... sticks there). Perhaps this is to keep airborne predators from spotting it. I don't know.

A bit of backstory, though, for those of you who haven't known me for ages in person. I have not had a different haircut in... get this... approximately 20 years. (I am rounding a bit, because I'm not entirely sure at which point I actually had hair, and at which point it was left to just... grow. I do know, however, that there are some pictures of me with the typical two year-old haircut, so that can be ruled out safely plus a year for... good luck. And I know there was a phase, somewhere well before two, when I was known as the "punk rock baby" because my hair did nothing but stick up straight. That's right. I biologically had appropriate hair for the 80s. Since I was approximately three, however, my hair has just... grown. It's always been long. There was a point in high school where I cut four inches of it off and no one noticed. That's how long my hair was. It's been getting progressively shorter since then, eventually reaching its shortest right before my fourth year, when there were parts of it that were actually above my shoulders, and there were layers. I really liked it, but when I got it cut again at the same place this past summer, the girl was suddenly shy about it and not only didn't put the layers back in, but left it about an inch longer than I wanted it. So now I have my predicament.

Here we have some haircuts that I like (all with picky reservations thereabouts, like "too short"--I want my hair at or just a tiny bit above my shoulders, no shorter--or "will always be in my face", but I trust these are things that stylists can correct). Also, for reference there is a picture of what my hair does when it's been cut relatively recently and is still behaving. (Actually, I think in that picture I'd actually gone longer without a haircut than I have right now, since I think that's still post-only-good-haircut. Which goes to show what a difference a proper haircut makes, I suppose. Because my hair will not behave like that anymore. And so it must go. Also the hat might be cheating. I don't care.) I'm not going to tell you my favourites, because that would skew the results.

Basically, rambling aside, I want opinions, suggestions, warnings, etc. I am scared. I haven't ever had a real haircut at a real salon and omg everywhere in the city haircuts are like, $50 so I'm probably going to have to go to one of the student training places and that could be truly horrific. It's either that, or go to the one cheap place I know of in Lakeview that I went to once before, where the large blue-haired tattooed and pierced stylist was rendered completely shy somehow by my hair and when I asked for three inches off, he only removed about one. Also it was $30 with student discount and that's still expensive. Ooooh what do I do? (See, I made this paragraph rambling too. Goshdarnit.)
