On my way through downtown yesterday, I was nearly destroyed by the number of tourists just milling around and looking somewhat lost and fascinated. On a whim (because these whims often dictate my existence on weekends), I ducked into a nearly-empty coffee shop, make my order to a glassy-eyed barista, was informed they couldn't take my $20, and then moved on down to wait for my (meticulously-prepared, in a way only achieved by not really knowing what you're doing) drink. I was followed a few moments later by a fairly typical large midwestern Tourist Man, who marched up to the counter, small swarm of fellow tourists in tow, and began thus:

Man: I want a coffee.
Glassy-eyed Barista: *nod*
Man: I want ice in it.
Barista: ...
Man: And I want it all blended up.
Barista: ...
Man: You understand?

I then had a very difficult time obtaining my drink and leaving with a straight face. In hindsight, though, this is probably how I should have ordered my drink as well.

In other news... Old Town Aquarium is not, as I thought, actually a bar, but is in honest goodness an aquarium/fish store. I met a hover-slug there. It was really nice. (I want a hover-slug. I don't know what he was really called, but he was adorable, in a kind of squishy sea creature way.)

What exactly is a hover-slug? I tried look it up on wikipedia and on their website, but I wasn't able to find it. The name sounds so interesting, I want to know what it is!

Hehe, unfortunately I don't remember what he actually was. Hover-slug is just what we all decided he looked like. I think I'm going to have to go back there sometime and see. The website doesn't have any pictures of him. (Probably because colorful fish are more entertaining to normal people.)

Haha, go figure. I thought it was a real name. Oh well, if you ever remember what it was, let me know. I'd like to see a picture.

To tide you over (and in case [livejournal.com profile] songless_siren is right)... Nudibranchs (http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/06/nudibranchs/doubilet-photography) are adorable in exactly the way hover-slug was adorable. Well, and a lot of them look like weird sushi. (But if you skip all the way to the end of the photos there, the first one on the last page is the insanely happy-looking nudibranch (my favourite)... his picture has been on my fridge since winter.) ^_^

Oh wow, these pictures are great! I made the first one (the blue slugs) my desktop picture at work. They are just so happy! Another women at work says their eyes follow her around the room, lol. Thanks! :D

I want your *face* all blended up

...Hover-slug? As in, a slug that is swimming or floating through the water? I would assume it was some sort of nudibranch. What did it look like? Was it colorful? Hmmmmmmm... you've piqued my biologist's curiosity.

Re: I want your *face* all blended up

Oooh, you may be right. And since I see the friendly nudibranch on my fridge every day, I'm probably already predisposed to finding even less colorful sea-sluggies cute. I'm definitely going to have to investigate further. My only objection is that I don't recall him having outside-type gills, but at the time I was mostly entranced by his hovering and cute countenance. I think I'm going to drop by there again after I register for my mandolin lessons. (-:
