Here I go again... see, I am seven episodes into Speed Grapher. And you know what? I still don't know if I like it or not. Of course, what I have to say probably includes spoilers for episode 7, so... I mean, really. So much of this is wtf. If you're going to go for shock value on things, leave Kagura out of this! One: She is way too freaking young for Saiga. If he can dress up and wear hot glasses and pass as her teacher, he. is. too. old. for. her. (and is, by default, belong to me). I will maintain that he's got some sort of fatherly thing going on for her, because he feels sorry for her or something, but she's totally got the unrequited love thing going on, and combined with singing "Amazing Grace" that just sort of makes her annoying. Very annoying. She is absolutely holding the story back from where I'd like to see it go. And if she drags Saiga down into her bizarre angst then I'm going to be angry. I mean, he's already got enough to angst about, he's being chased down by super-sense-of-smell-style Envy and he can't take pictures of anything without freaking blowing it up. The whole damsel in distress element is totally useless. Except she's pretty, which is, I guess, important somehow. I dunno... maybe we'll discover why her saliva gives people super powers, but I somehow doubt that's going to happen.
And the whole super-villain of the week though (though apparently temporarily on hold) is just bizarre. The whole format of the story-telling in this is like, totally beyond me. What are they trying to do? Most importantly (as if the diamond-lady wasn't bad enough), WTF IS WITH THE EVIL DENTIST?! His tools come out of his back. And they're all like... gooey and mucus-y. That's just disturbing on so many levels. And not like, semi-desirable disturbing, but disturbing that is coloured with so many shades of wrong that I don't know what to do. I mean, yeah the club scenes were disturbing, but evil dental tools popping out of someone's back is just... I dunno. I lack a word for it. That scene actually made my teeth hurt. And I have a remarkable tolerance for being able to listen to things like nails on chalkboards and dental drills.
Also, just so I can get it down... the ending theme annoys me. It's bad. Almost as bad as Life is Like a Boat or whatever-the-heck the first ending was for Bleach (actually, that might've been worse. At least this one is sort of in-tune).
At least Saiga's got cool friends. I see potential in this doctor dude for progressing the story a bit, but I'm almost certain that by the next episode 1) he will be dead and 2) Kagura will be re-captured, and perhaps tortured a bit by the dentist. Oh, and if he diagnosed her with a brain cloud, I shall laugh (and you can laugh with me if you get that reference, because I'm not sure anyone other than my roomie last year and those of us she made watch it ever saw that movie). But they clearly said "shadow." See? I am very slowly learning Japanese (not that I haven't known shadow since it was pointed out to me that "ho" is fire and "kage" is shadow and, despite my spell-check's insistance that it is "hoagie," hokage means "fire shadow"). And there are officially too many quotation marks in that parenthesized aside.
If you ever feel the need to beat me over the head for my pedantic/crazy rambling, go ahead. Just warn me.
