Pet time!

So, a question has been raised in my apartment. A question of pets. We are in a situation that doesn't allow us a cat (or a dog, for that matter) because of a $400 pet deposit. But both deathscytheheck and I have been needing something small and cute to dote on. Concerns already voiced include not wanting to clean up the messes, and what happens to them when we move. Right now, it looks like we'll end up getting two rats, but I'm not sure yet whether a rat is really what I want (even though there is one at the pet store near where I work that looks rather adorable and has endeared itself to me). So... my choices are few, but I ask anyway, because more opinions are good. I know I don't want anything bigger than a rat--guinea pigs are sweet, but I've had two already, got far too attached to them... aaand they make a mess. Ferrets are a lot of work, and kind of smell funny. Chinchillas are mean, and they bathe in dust, which is fundamentally wrong. So that basically leaves me with rats and mice. Mice are so cuuuute, but I don't think they'd be as entertaining. I do want something that can exhibit a personality (then again, my fish have had personalities). (I might also just get fish.) I also kind of want a snake or some kind of reptile, but I haven't found a kind that I like that doesn't eat fuzzies, and that'd make me sad. So... poll!
