Definitely a little worse for wear after the five hours I spent at work yesterday. My brain is clambering to escape, and is managing it in the oddest of ways. I kept typing completely unrelated (though interesting) words into documents today (foreclosing on a mortgage from "Homestar Mortgage" didn't help anything at all). I hope I caught all of them. Also, on my way to work, while passing through the intersection of Madison and Clark, just as I was considering whether I should ride over the manhole cover or swerve to avoid it, it occurred to me how strange it is that no one pays any mind to the fact that "Roman" is most of the word "romance." "What the heck is up with that?" says my brain and so, now that I'm home and enjoying the few hours of free time I get, I find myself poking around etymology dictionaries. It turns out "romance" was more a term for adventure stories/chivalrous tales told in the vernacular (or at least, romance-language vernacular, specifically French which, of course, is derived from Latin, the language of the Romans, hence romance in that sense). It was basically just knight-in-shining-armor stuff until about the 1600s (300 years from when it first appeared), when it gained the love story sense, then it puttered along for another 200+ years before it was possible to have "a romance" outside of a story, and then, around the 1940s, supposedly, is when the verb form appeared. Until the 1940s, you couldn't romance someone! How weird is that? (How easy is it to be unintentionally anachronistic when writing period pieces, too!)

I'm pretty sure this is a sign that it's time for me to go back to school (this will be the theme, I think, for the next few months, as if it hasn't been for the months prior to this as well). As such, I'm really looking forward to my trek up to Northwestern next Friday to check out Medill (especially since Northwestern is supposed to be the sworn enemy of the UofC). Hopefully they won't say anything like "Oh, you'll never get in with that GPA," or "No journalism experience? What are you thinking?" Also, hopefully I won't just hide in the corner, and will actually talk to someone about whether it's what I really want to do. Hrm.

So, now that I've gone and trapped myself again, I think for the sake of my sanity I need to take a real vacation. I haven't ever had one of those. I think things will have settled down by the end of August, so my plan is to pick a city, spend a week there, do the tourist thing for a few days, and then just wander and see what I can find. Also, I aim to get some use out of my passport, since I've already called off my Canada plans (no music festivals this summer! Agh!).

I just can't decide where, exactly, I want to go. London is easy, and probably a good place to start, but I think if I spend some time reviewing my French I could survive almost as well in Paris. Those are my top two choices. But I'm also coming off of a very unhappy and unstable couple of months (and all I have between me and more of them is hope), so I'm not against throwing myself into a city I could be completely, hopelessly lost in, like Tokyo (though most tickets to Tokyo are almost double those to London and Paris, so I think Tokyo is a For Later plan. And probably For More Than a Week).

My goal, someday, is to be able to do this every year, though I know that's a long way off. This plan is already going to dent my savings, but dear goodness it is necessary right now, because I have to shake off this feeling of being trapped.

So, what do you guys think? Where should I go? I know there are a lot of places that haven't even crossed my mind yet, but should've. Barcelona? Moscow? Amsterdam? Hong Kong? Sydney? I'm leaving out lush, foresty real vacation-y places for now, because I want to explore, not... catch malaria and break both of my ankles. (I know myself. That would happen. I'll stick to probably getting hit by a double-decker bus or getting clobbered with baguettes or accidentally becoming a pop idol or something other or refrigerator.)

So, I was thinking going to culinary school would be like, I don't know, attending a state school or something, price-wise. $22,000??? For 24 weeks? That's... I mean... freaking crap. A year at the UofC was like, $30,000 when I stared (it's almost $40k now, but whatever). And the application fee is... unmentionable. Freaking crap, man, who the heck has that kind of money if they're going to go work in a bakery? Crap. Do all associates degrees cost this much? What the heck?

Why is every irrational dream I have completely unattainable in the dumbest ways possible?

Man, I am going back to wanting to be an astronaut. At least it was a lack of science aptitude that was keeping me from that, rather than CRAZY TUITION or NO ONE IS HIRING YOU HAHA UNLESS YOU WORK FOR FREE or, I don't know, SCREW VALID CULTURAL EXCHANGE, YOU'RE NOT CORPORATE ENOUGH TO TEACH OUR CHILDREN YOU HIPPIE.
Today was surprisingly pleasant. I got up way too early, lazed around, and then ended up helping [livejournal.com profile] euthymic get tickets for Hillside, which, if I can get the time off work, I'll be going to too. Of course, this means two weekends in a row in July will be made of music festival, but the only downside I see is going back to work afterwards. (-: And the fact that the two weekends combined will cost me a bit more than $300... but all things considered, that's a ridiculously cheap vacation. And I'm spending the money now, so by July I won't even miss it, and it'll feel like free music.

So this got longer than expected, so here is the day divided up neatly.

From 10-4:30: MSI )

5ish: In which I discover that my neighborhood might be cool )

6-8: Stringed Instruments Continue to Betray Me. And a Torontoan )

And ah... gosh this is long. 8-9: I sat down and wrote about my day because I have nothing better to do, except maybe make dinner like a normal, functional person. I guess today was an eventful day.
