Since I forgot to post about this... my grades were finally posted online. I am half happy, and half not-so-happy. I've managed a 3.3333333... a 3 and a third GPA this quarter. Which isn't bad, I guess. I mean, it's still above what I need to be on the Dean's List, and what I need to graduate with honours at all... But I still feel bad about it. The worst part is, my lowest grade was in French. I don't know what I could have done to bring that grade up higher than a B, but... it's still frustrating. Which is why I'm glad I'm not taking it again next quarter (Hooray for drama class!). Media Asthetics I probably could've gotten an A in if I'd actually participated in class, but I was just too shy to do it. I dont' know how to deal with people in that class, because they remind me of the Youth Leadership Camp of Doom people. Lots of the people at the UofC remind me of them... it's scary. But, as it stands, the grade was a B+, which I guess was OK. Considering my first paper in the class was complete crap. Then again, that set me up well for the "improvement" part of the class, and the teacher didn't expect a whole lot from the rest of my papers. I don't imagine she was too horribly happy with my final paper though. I wonder if we'll ever get comments on it... Let's hope the next two quarters of the class go better. I do suppose that I could not take the third quarter if it's terribly bad. I mean, I should do good in Civ judging from what it appears to be (History class with writing). And Soc shouldn't be bad, either... since I'm taking Classics. Which isn't an easy class.. but I've definitely learned my lesson about the "easy" class. Stupid Media Asthetics!!! So, obviously, my highest grade was in Calculus, where I managed to pull off an A-. Let's hope for the same luck next quarter, because we've just hit the point where I don't understand anything anymore. And I don't want to ask some of the people in my house, because... oh, I don't know. It just doesn't seem to really help anyway. So there you have it... the results of my first quarter at college... (3.0+3.3+3.7)/3=3.33333 GPA of DOOM. Let's hope next quarter is more fun. I do think that next quarter should be better grade-wise. I have no idea how I'll do in Core Bio, but it shouldn't be all that bad. I think if I try I can manage an A in there. Same with Drama. I don't think I could do worse than a B in Calc, just because of the curve, and I imagine I'll get pretty much the same grade in Media Asthetics unless the new prof grades insanely different. So, next quarter let's be optimistic and shoot for a 3.925. I'll give myself room for one A-. Realisticly, I think I'll end up with a 3.675. Grr to all GPAs!

hey, i saw in the uchicago community that you'll be taking core bio, and i just wanted to give you my condolences! i just finished it, and it was pretty awful. zaragoza was my prof (i was in depth), and nobody liked her... fineshi (or something like that!) was the breadth teacher of the same section, and people really liked (and actually learned from!) her, so if you see that you have either zaragoza or fineshi, BOMB THE TEST they give you on the first day. because you DO NOT want zaragoza.

as for the class, i wouldn't worry too much about the grades. i got a B+ and didn't put forth much effort at all... i didn't go to class that frequently (because i wasn't learning anything from zaragoza, anyway) and didn't ever do a lot of studying, so you shouldn't have a problem pulling an A. there's a writing program that's 40% of your grade, so if you can write dry papers about the human genome project, diabetes, and evolution you're golden. there are also labs; i did them with my roommate a lot, which was helpful. basically, the only thing you have to worry about it staying awake in class. good luck!
