Being rather broke, I have happened upon a rather tough dilemma. I have just enough expendable income and time to do one enriching cultural awesome thing in November. The question, unfortunately, is which thing to do. I can either go see Hamlet... or the Decemberists. And I cannot decide. I've (quite sadly) never seen Shakespeare performed live. Nor have I seen the Decemberists (and I haven't been to a concert in Chicago for at least a year and a half, though it should be ever because I really don't think I should count the My Chemical Romance/Lost Prophets show I was dragged to, because I nearly died). Shakespeare will always be performed live, I suppose, but I won't always have a chance to see Hamlet as directed by someone from the Royal Shakespeare Company. And there's always a chance the Decemberists will, I dunno, disappear or get their instruments stolen again or something. And, you know, in their separate ways, they have about equal potential for awesome as far as I'm concerned. But they're basically the same weekend, and they're gonna cost money, so...

It's a tough call, and both really would be awesome, I know, but I guess I feel like while you can go listen to a CD of the Decemberists any time (not the same thing as seeing them live, I know), there's really no way to approximate the experience of seeing a performance of Hamlet. Really tough choice, but I think Hamlet's going to have to win here, in my view.

I could pull out my gigantic Complete Works of Shakespeare book and read it while listening to the Decemberists...

Oooh it's such a tough decision. And I should've known, considering the sort of people I know, everyone would be all "Shakespeare!" at me. Goshdarn you. That's the one that's on a weekday, too. (So I suppose before I make a decision, I should make sure that's not the day before my next photo project is due...) I think you're sort of right, though... and my next chance to see Hamlet properly might be ages from now... and if I'm not paying attention, I might not even know about it. Hmmm...

If you go, I'm going to be in town next weekend (Nov4-5) and I would totally go with you. Hamlet all the way to the beach!

Alas, if I went I'd be going with the dorm, which is on the 8th. But you're gonna be in town, eh? You need to call me, maybe we can hang out or something. I'm still debating heading up to visit you with Christina this weekend, since it's gonna cost me like, $50 that I don't have. Goshdarn being broke.

Like you said, Shakespeare will always be performed live, and presumably it will continue to be directed by people from the Royal Shakespeare Company. You're young. [/my reasoning]

Ohnoes! Finally a vote for the Decemberists!

This is true... when I'm old and more pretentious, it'll be harder to find music I like by people who're still touring, whereas Shakespeare will presumably always exist. Barring the apocalypse or something, but that'd kind of screw everything. (-;
