Really, I could have started this whole thing Thursday, what with emergency trips in the rain down 55th street to the tailors to get slits cut in the side of Mr Vash-san's coat. But that was about all that happened, anyway. Friday... the big departure day. And what a day it was!
I should have known that all the fine bits of planning would be shot to heck within the first few minutes of the morning. I managed not to sleep in, at least. In fact, I woke up at just a bit after 7 o'clock, and almost sat down and watched a bit more Saiyuki (Skirtpants was quick to assume my obsession on this one, and it's super-annoying. I don't know enough of it to be obsessed, and I find myself caring less about the plot than about how it looks cool, so I think it's going to fall someplace outside of obsession anyway). But anyway... instead of this I actually made a good decision and pack, which was über-useful later on, as you'll see. In lifeguarding we did more backboarding in deep water... sort of boring stuff, except I nearly wore myself out treading water and holding the blasted thing up for almost ten minutes. Gah! Err.. then I went to Civ and had the midterm explained to me. I won't go into it, because it was boring. Oh, and I totally forgot to mention that it was raining all morning! Holy cow, was it raining all morning. It wasn't all that bad when I left, and it wasn't all that cold, either. So I neglected to bring my umbrella, figuring I was going to be wet from lifeguarding anyway. If I wasn't already soaked, I would have been from walking down to Civ. I actually used the nifty little tunnel-like passage from Cobb to Gates-Blake to stay out of the rain so I could meet with my Hum teacher, who basically nailed down every problem I've had with his class the past two quarters, and hit exactly what I knew was going on with my papers. It was... nice, sad, nerve-wracking... err... I wish he hadn't waited until freaking seventh week of this quarter to force me to talk to him. In the end, we ended up talking until nearly 11:30 because I made the mistake of mentioning htat I was going to an anime convention, which got him started on all sorts of things, including the next book we're reading, which I am expected to be interested in and to write my final paper on. Eep. So I finally got out of there at 11:30, the time that I was suppsoed to meet Skirtpants and Gamer-san in Eckhart after already having been back to the dorm, showered, and with my stuff. Not happening. I ran across the quads in absolutely pouring rain (thoroughly soaked at this point) and met them there. I had to explain what had happened, and we went back to the dorm, much to their frustration with me. Darn.
Back at the dorm I took a quick shower so I wouldn't be a dirty con-girlie too quickly, and threw the last of my stuff into my bag. Hooray for packing early. And I didn't forget anything which is an absolute first! After a whole lot of running back and forth, forgetting to print things, checking directions, and checking mail, we finally caught the 55 out to the Red Line. Of course, on the way there we almost got hit by a car and listened to these two guys argue in the middle of the street. Rain makes people weird. Anyway... it was my first ride on the blue line, but will not be my last (two weeks! WOO!!). Next time I know I can go it alone though, because it's actually quite nice. Anyway... it turns out our directions were a little wrong, and we first got off at the wrong stop. Our transfers were still good though, so it didn't bother us too much. We got off the train, and walked down to the street. The BlueLine was like, a block or so from the hotel but we ended up crossing both the on and exit ramps to 190, since we sort of... lost the sidewalk. We almost jumped the fence, but thought better of it and went around front the normal way.
I think we finally got to the con at around 2... Of course, Mr Skirtpants managed to not only not know anyone in the anime club's phone number, but... well, first things first his first offense was not knowing the real last name of the person whose room we were staying in. So we couldn't get a key. The fun part was, while waiting in line, we saw this guy cosplaying as Roy Mustang. And his costume was quite quite good. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to take a picture. Anyway... then we realized he didn't know anyone's number, so we had to hope that someone would happen to stop by the room so we could put our stuff down. And our stuff was heavy. After getting turned down several times by the hotel staff, who were terribly.. how should I put it... err... short with the con people all weekend, we decided to head over to the convention center and pick up our badges. Which took most of us forever, except for certain people whose last names are at the beginning of the alphabet. On the walk over, aside from trampling even more landscaping Skirtpants was calling all sorts of people searching for the phone number of the person whose name the rooms were under. Lacking paper, this stayed on my hand nearly all weekend:

Because I was sort of a dirty con-girl. The freezing showers were not my fault! But I digress... We finally got ahold of someone who knew what was going on, and it turned out that Skirtpants had got the name wrong at the front desk... several times over. He headed back to the hotel to get the keys, which they still wouldn't give him because he wasn't actually the person the room belonged to or something. So after getting our badges, we all had to sit in the hotel and hope to run into the Anime Club people we were staying with. Luckily we only had to wait for a few minutes until they showed up with skit supplies and such. We were super-lucky. We finally dropped our stuff off in the room, and headed out into the hotel for real. And we took pictures. There wasn't a whole lot of cosplaying going on Friday (at least in comparison to Saturday), but it was a good thing because it took a bit of getting used to. The first thing meeting me, as we waited for the elevator, was a group of a few of the many Vashes I'd see this weekend. This was one of the few pictures I had the camera for. Actually, you can assume any non-posed weird picture here is by me, and everything else is by Skirtpants because I was too shy to just go up to people and ask them for pictures. Woo.

We went over to the Dealer Room (henceforth the DR) where I met awesome automail guy, who was probably the best Ed (of about five, three of which being female) at the con, even though his hair was black...

I actually didn't get this picture until Saturday, but it'll fit better here since I don't want to throw all the pictures into the Saturday bit of the report. Since it's going to be a tiny bit of writing and a lot of internet connection-injuring pictures. I did manage to find some things I really rather wanted, but being prudent (a bad idea) I decided to hold out until the end of the con. I should have known better, and next time I will. I did get the... stuff... that made me think immediately of sketchy. So I had to buy it for her. I hope she likes it! Oh, and the buttons that made me go Eep! when I saw them because there was a Hughes one. Mmmm, Hughes! My bookbag was later converted into a mini-FMA shrine. All was well with the world.
Around five we were going to head out to dinner, but ended up being distracted by the amusingly... the only word I can think of here that's appropriate is absurd... J-Rock concert. The pictures I got of this didn't all come out too well, but the best-looking one is this one.

It's Sid! Pronounced Seed-o, generally. Though the drummer confused our chants for New York. There was (and still is) a bit of confusion as to the sexes of the members, and it's far beyond us to be able to sex Japanese names. Especially because you so rarely come across real Japanese names in anime. Hehehe. The concert was an hour late starting, which didn't surprise me or Gamer-san, but Skirtpants complained quite a bit while waiting. He tended to complain whenever we weren't doing what he wanted to do, though. So we'll disregard that. After the concert it was (amazingly) still light out, and we decided to walk down the street and search for dinner. A word to the wise here... Rosemont is DESOLATE. We picked the wrong direction to start with. Another word... ROSEMONT CONSIERGES ARE USELESS AND ARE LIARS. So we ended up eating at the hotel, which was a little expensive but not that bad. Not much worse than ordering pizza in though, which was like, 23 dollars for a large pizza! But I'll complain about that for Saturday's bit. After dinner, in our relentless (and unsucessful) search for Pocky we ended up in the game room downstairs. There was one room full of people playing various console games, and another with arcade games, including DDR. Which I ended up playing for the heck of it. I am apparently not prepared for arcade-type DDR, being spoiled by my lovely soft-type pads. I step too lightly, and manage not to set off the sensors. I failed a bit, and felt faintly disgraced. Later on, we headed back to the room, sat around, and decided to go downstairs and watch miscellaneous cartoons (really cartoons, not anime), followed by MIDNIGHT MADNESS, which was all fandubs. We only stayed for Nescaflowne because it was nearly two hours long, and only amusing for the first hour. I wanted to see Death and Redeath or whatever the other one was called, but it was 3am and I didn't have the energy to do it.
The night was spent on the floor of the Hyatt with about 8 other people. There was a lot of loud snoring, and a sterotypical bit of people stealing my blanket (which was also doubling as my pillow), which always happens at sleepovers where I have a spot on the floor. I got about three hours of sleep, because I woke up at six once, managed to fall asleep again for a bit at 6:30, then got up again for good at 7.
And on to Saturday! Which I will write sometime tomorrow, because I am totally going to bed now.
