So, between wandering my friends page and my journal archives (and
partially inspired by
bugboy3001) I realized that I
did the whole New Year's meme thing last year... so for fun, here is
last year's pasted in, with this year's answers underneath it. It
ought to be amusingly different.
1. What did you do in 2003 that you'd never done before?
Spent three months away from home... ate at a dining hall, survived a quarter of college calculus. Applied to colleges, stressed about getting into colleges. Graduated from high school. Lots of stuff.
Errr... Oh, went to an anime convention. There you go.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Gah! I don't even remember if I made any New Year's resolutions... so I guess that's as good as not making any. I suppose I will make a resolution again this year, but I usually just make it up as soon as anyone asks me.
Yes! And yes again. Hooray for me! Of course, I have yet to write my 500 words for tonight but... we'll worry about that later.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not that I'm aware of...
My cousin!
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.
Still no!
5. What countries did you visit?
Me? Travel? I think considering my usual movement around the country, we'll consider Illinios a different country.
Sadly, still none. Darnit. I should totally go to Canada for spring break or something.
6. What would you like to have in 2004 that you lacked in 2003?
Better grades, more time for fun, and... more money for less work!
Well, we got the more money for less work thing, at least. Mwahahaha. In 2005 I'd like to have a major. For real. And perhaps some idea of what I'm doing in the future. Oh, and better grades, more time for fun, and more money for less work. And friends that are easier to hang out with.
7. What date from 2003 will remain etched upon your memory?
I guess that's pretty much either graduation, or my first day of orientation at the UofC...
Holy crap, graduation seems like it was so long ago. Last year... yeah... nothing happened. Sadly, the first memory that comes to mind is ACen. Not the con, but running across the highway onramp to get to the hotel. Hehehe.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting accepted to the UofC, and then actually being able to afford it... sort of.
Getting an actual A in Physics! Take that!
9. What was your biggest failure?
Hmm... Must've been my attempt at physics.
The whole WTF thing with CompSci.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Lots of headaches and other stress-related things, but nothing serious (thank goodness!)
Haven't been sick yet... Was sick a lot winter quarter though. I seperate the years by school year.. it makes things hard. Neep. So in general, not much sickness since school ended. During winter and spring quarters, sick a lot, injured a lot. Evil track.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My college education.
Guess I'll go with "college education" again. Even though it's EVIL, and mostly because I haven't bought much else.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
What an odd question... I don't know. Maybe some of my floormates invovled in the clean-up brigade that one disgusting night of drunken-ness... umm. How about all the LotR fans that managed to not yell at me or be mean at the midnight showing? That was worth celebrating.
I can't think of anyone off the top of my head, sadly. So... no one's been exceptionally awesome to me.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
I'll pretty much generalize here and say the American government. Gah!
The American people. Do you realize I'm going to have to leave the country in two years! And because of your evil education system, I can't go anyplace that doesn't speak English!
14. Where did most of your money go?
School.
Again.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Finally leaving for college!
Sigh... ummm.... nothing that deserves three reallys.
16. What song will always remind you of 2003?
Probably anything from Keep it Together will remind me of the summer, and Everything to Everyone will remind me of the first few months of school.
Probably something by Ben Folds. But I realize now that the music that reminds me most of 2003 is all Radiohead.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you happier or sadder?
Hard to tell... probably about the same. Maybe a little happier, because this time last year I had just gotten my deferral from UChi...
I wouldn't say "sadder," but less happy is an appropriate term for it.
ii. thinner or fatter?
A little more in shape, I think, but not necessarily thinner.
Thinner
iii. richer or poorer?
Pretty much the same (which is broke). Far more money has passed through my hands, though.
Poorer! Dear goodness!
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Getting to know people.
Getting involved in social groups off of this floor. It's driving me CRAZY!
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Homework... working in general.
Allowing tedious conversation to continue far longer than necessary.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
At home! With my family and (hopefully, if we can get together sometime) my friends.
At home again. Wasn't bad, but still not long enough.
22. Did you fall in love in 2003?
Can't say I did, no. Had a crush on a fair number of people, I guess. But that's about it.
Yes and no. Fell in love with things, art forms, artists, writers. People - no. Fell out of love with a lot of people.
23. How many one night stands?
None.
Heh. What? Why? No.
24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Sigh... I haven't actually watched TV in so long.. I guess I'll stick with what I watched all the time reeeally early this year while I was still in high school.. CSI.
The FullMetal Alchemist dub gets this spot, just for not actually sucking, and actually getting me downstairs into the TV lounge once a week. Counting all TV programmes (including the ones on my computer) it's FMA again, but the Japanese dub. Because the original is still always better.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
There are some people that I didn't know this time last year that I really don't like a whole lot... but hate is a verily strong word.
Can't say that I do, no. I might feel a little more strongly against some of the people I rather disliked before, but no one new.
26. What was the best book you read?
Huh. Well, Order of the Pheonix was rather good... But I think I'd have to say Good Omens. Woo!
Neverwhere was verily pretty. If I could list fanfic on here, there would be one that I might put (but that's cheating and also in a way demeans the artistic pretention is try to appear to have). And Dune, for all I've read of it, was quite interesting.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
This is such a strange question for me to answer, but it might just be all that weird remixed game music I've picked up.
Either J-rock or Ben Folds. Je ne sais pas.
28. What did you want and get?
To go to the UofC
My job as a DCA.
29. What did you want and not get?
More financial aid... hehe, no.. hmm.. I can't really think of anything that I really wanted badly and didn't get. There were a lot of concerts I missed though.
Lots of things I'd rather not list here, since it's a public journal and all. These things that make me sound sort of perpetually bitter anymore, now that I'm back here. Gah!
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Return of the King... and Matrix Revolutions just because of all the insane conversations had afterwards.
Wow... umm... I know I've seen more than like, three movies this year. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. There. Mmmm.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I had a birthday this year? Huh... I don't even remember having a party. But it was my 18th. Yay.
Ah, the big surprise expensive restaurant trip. That was fun. If they'd done it to me this year though, I'd hate them for it. Oh, the days before early May of last year. Holy poo I'm going to be twenty this year. Ahhh!
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not being scared to death of Chicago when I got there to the point that I had to cut my schedule down to a bunch of rather useless and boring classes that later drove me nuts.
Not having confined myself so much to the house. Or at least, having been a wee bit more careful in the housing lottery, and perhaps having the foresight to see what effect all the transfers would have on the house.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?
The usual t-shirts, jeans, and striped-shirts-underneath-t-shirts.
Same. My fashion sense is so boring.
34. What kept you sane?
During school, wanting to come home. Now... nothing. mwahahaha!
Writing and watching anime.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Huh. I... don't know.
Hehehe.. Well... okay we can't count anime guys. Though because of his blog I've sort of got an odd crush on Zach Braff. How about that one?
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
That dang blasted war on terrorism of ours.
Stupid election.... Morals tick me off now!
37. Who did you miss?
My friends in high school... sort of high school in general.
Same. I don't see them enough. I also miss my roomie now, but that's the second half of the year, so I don't know if it counts as much.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
This isn't fair! I've met so many new people this year. Therefore, I refuse to give this question a proper answer.
Dude, it's like I haven't met anyone new this year. How's that for a change? I think I might just have to go with my friends from work. Because they're awesome and I guess newish.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2003.
How to take care of drunk people.
Deal with it when you have to. If you don't have to, say something about it. (I'm still working on this, but at least the idea is there in my head).
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
"The thunder struck, the clouds appeared
Our fearless crew was not prepared
and pretty soon the boats came for us half a million strong
We gathered arms, we fired shells
We build a wall around ourselves
and pretty soon the spirit was a lot like what it used to be back home
So far away from everyone and everything starts today"
"Everybody knows
It hurts to grow up
And everybody does
It's so weird to be back here
Let me tell you what
The years go on and
We're still fighting it, we're still fighting it
And you're so much like me
I'm sorry"
