So... I've kind of been plagued lately by the mystery of why Valois is always mentioned in the stories about Hyde Park. I mean, guys, it's a crappy little cafeteria (that is, apparently, better than you'd expect), with "SEE YOUR FOOD" written on the awning in larger letters than the name. It's one of those places you pass and go "What? Hmm..."

And then it hit me today, as I was reading through the Hyde Park restaurant inspections... I remembered that everything we have down here is either 1) owned by the University 2) Thai food or 3) a chain. No one is going to get interviewed in the Hyde Park Giordano's, no one is going to get interviewed in Bartlett (which barely passed its inspection. Go UofC! Way to learn from having BJ shut down!) Valois... Valois is apparently the only non-ethnic, non-national, non-university restaurant we have that people can sit down and talk in. (The two more infamous restaurants, student-wise, don't even seem to be on the list. Maybe Orly's isn't a restaurant anymore--it's had about five identity crises I've been aware of, each resulting in a more confusing theme (try eating pseudo-Italian in a restaurant decorated in southwest decor), and perhaps it's entirely a bakery now. And then there's Morry's Deli, where I've only ever heard of people getting food poisoning. However, even if they still exist, they're also not places where CNN could poke its head in and go "Hay guyz!")

No wonder I never go out to eat down here.

But seriously, national media. Valois? Seriously?

... Though at least they passed their inspection.

You forgot the best: Ribs and Bibs. But I don't think it is practical for people to get interviewed there.

Also, I think some major sociological text was written about valois.

I always forget about Ribs N Bibs... I think I've only been there twice. And as far as I know no one's gotten food poisoning there, so it's not remarkable by my standards. (-;

I think I'm going to have to investigate this Valois thing further. It seems to be oddly powerful. Maybe I could tap into that...

Dear god. It sounds like you have some stunning eatery choices. O_o

Oh yes. Hyde Park is all about the good eats. (Though we do have a good pancake house. And the Thai food is generally pretty good. Which it should be, since there are literally three in a row on 55th street, and they're all still in business. And even if these things were not good, Hyde Park Produce would totally make up for it. Best produce store that is not a farmer's market EVER. At least in Chicago. (-;) Really, I think it's just that everything the University owns or has touched is generally pretty sketchy. Even the Med, which is a university institution, but not university-owned, is grade-A sketchy as far as the inspections go.
