So, the interview went kind of badly, and I kind of spent most of the rest of the evening moping... so I'm trying not to do any more of that right now. I'll just say that the guy interviewing me was a bit awkward, and spent a good part of the interview expressing his disinterest in me. So yeah. Not fun. And I officially hate my job search. I'm probably not the only academic type ever to have trouble adjusting to the working world, nor will I be the last, but eesh. There's got to be a haven of people who haven't been completely corrupted, who'd be willing to take the poor wanderers in.

In other news, tonight I had to finally figure out how to use the gas stove without dying (I've been around electric ones forever, and gas ones scare me on a very basic level because of my fear of leaving it on and blowing up). I got it lit... it went out... I got it lit again... I couldn't turn it down... the knob came off, it went out, I got it lit again... and finally convinced it that it did indeed have something like a low setting. Fun for everyone. But now I have my rice with surprise bits of fish in it and (provided the surprise about the fish isn't that it's undercooked) will be able to survive another day.

I also have a rather formidable pile of books that I brought back from the library. Mark Z. Danielewski's new(ish) book (Only Revolutions), books by David Mitchell (Ghostwritten) and Michael Chabon (Wonder Boys) because I've been meaning to read more by them since last spring quarter, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, because someone recommended it to me a while ago, and a random Battlestar Galactica novel I ran across on the new books shelf just below Only Revolutions... I figured it was fate, and obviously I'm meant to poke my nose back into officially sanctioned spin-off fiction (even if the title is "Sagittarius is Bleeding" and that seems to me like an awful title).

Argh, I'm really sorry about the interview. Even if they weren't going to hire you, it would have been polite to show interest, at the very least. Fuckers. Have you looked into any retail jobs or things like that? They... suck, but they're good for money until you can find something better. (And on that note -- don't do fast food. Whatever you do, don't do fast food.)

By the way, would that happen to the PAPERBACK edition of Only Revolutions? :D

I think that interview is basically why I don't like businesspeople. Urgh. I think I've resigned myself to hunting down an $8/hr minimum wage-type job now, since interviewers for anything more like to toss the word "career" around like there are people out there that want to spend the rest of their lives filing and copying. Pah. I probably haven't looked closely enough at retail, but most of the places I know of that are near enough to where I am now won't be hiring until August, so that kind of leaves me high and dry. (I learned my lesson about fast food-type places with the movie theatre. That was miserable.)

No, it's hardcover. Why?

Oh, and I finally got your e-mail today, because I always forget to check my gmail (so don't think I was ignoring you or running away or something). Don't worry about it. And I'll send you my phone number, so you have it in case you need it.

Well, you know, filing and copying is serious business. And kind of tedious since that's what I did at my last job and no one had anything organized so it was always a mad scrabble to find whatever worksheet it was for the teacher so the kiddies could do what they need to do. But at least it was pretty chill in comparison to most other places. As for the retail thing... huh. Most of the retail type places are hiring out the wazoo here since most of the kids are out for summer.

Dammit. The paperback version has my art in one of the collages on Sam's side of the book. I'm not sure if the paperback is out yet, now that I think about it, but the publisher sent me a copy. They... only used a tiny piece (and I kind of don't blame them since I rushed it and it was crap), but it's still my bee and my name in someone's book. An actual published book. ...It sank in a couple of days ago and I'm finally happy about it.

Nah, it's cool. And thanks!

Ooooh, that is cool. Amazon says the paperback comes out the 10th... I'm going to have to find a copy and look at it when it's out. (-: How'd you get to do that?

Danielewski and Pantheon had an art contest a while back, the winner getting all of Danielewski's books, signed. I didn't win, obviously, but Pantheon asked last minute a bunch of people if they could use their art in the paperback version of the book, then sent us all a copy a few days ago along with more stickers. So I've got a book and a shitton of OR stickers. :D

I'm actually kind of surprised they sent us all a copy of the book. I thought they wouldn't for some reason, but I'm not complaining.

*squish* It'll be better next time. It certainly can't get much worse than the I'm Obviously Not Going to Hire You So Why Are You Still Here guy. Worst comes to it, try waitressing at a TGI Fridays or some equivalent place. My co-worker used to work there and got on average about twelve dollars an hour. It's not the best, and the pay's not very steady, but they hire people with the expectation that they start working Right Now.
