I really don't have much to say right now, but I've been wanting to use this icon. Originally, I was going to ramble for a while about Battlestar Galactica (which is kind of madness right now, in my opinion Madness? This is Galactica!) but I'm scatterbrained and don't have anything terribly worthwhile to say, other than I hope Starbuck isn't a cylon, because that'd be very cool writing-wise, and it'd point to the massive final-five-cylon conspiracy involving lots of people being manipulated to crazy extents. But after some thinking as I was rewatching last week's episode today (I still feel worse for the model ship than I do for Starbuck, since she was so resigned to it and that model was just a bystander)... I'm down to two options. Either Starbuck's a cylon and they were randomly retconning her memories through the cylon network, or she's not and Leoben chipped her brain just like they chipped Baltar's. And I really hope it's the latter, because right now everyone's all "Starbuck's a cylon!" and it's put the writers in an wonderful position to be hinting at all kinds of "uh, but look at this conspiracy of manipulative weirdness here" while no one's paying proper attention. It'd be beautiful. I suppose it could still be done if she was a cylon, but I honestly don't think anything would be gained if she was, especially the way she died. She was supposed to lead them to the Eye of Jupiter, right? Suppose the Cylons just wanted Starbuck out of the way? What better way. And, I dunno, to me that's a bit more real, and BSG can get away with things like that sometimes. And I love the idea of "The Plan" being something on the scale of an almost authorial manipulation of the characters by the final five. And Starbuck's flashbacks definitely laid a groundwork for that. (I don't like the word 'authorial' for it, though, because that makes it sound too much like it's built for literary analysis to be put into it. Then again... knowing BSG, I wouldn't be surprised.) The one thing I really don't like, though, is that Starbuck's death felt rushed. She wasn't in the episodes beforehand much, and then they went and pulled another Kat on us, with an episode full of nothing but flashback and backstory and whatnot. An obvious preparation for death. Kind of made it obvious that it was coming. This is definitely the token point of "if the writers can pull this off and have me still like this, wow, but otherwise I'm going to get angry" for me. And I'm probably not going to get to see the next two episodes on time. Alas.
Also, P.S., BSG, stop stealing my ideas. Your lawyer? Totally the same wtf-stereotype kind of character that my PI is, and that's completely unfair. Goshdarn you. But! I had him first. So there! Keep your stereotype lawyer of random! I bet my PI's got a cooler backstory anyway! And an excuse for being a hardnosed stereotype... Though sadly it can't involve any robot overlords. Le sigh. ... Or maybe it can...
And that was even more scatterbrained and useless than I thought. But, erm, maybe I'll edit it in the morning when my brain's closer to working. There was something else I was going to write about...
Oh! I saw 300 at the IMAX at Navy Pier today. It was indeed pretty, and I honestly don't see all the subversiveness people think is in it, since it was pretty obviously made to look arty and cool and not... whatever the heck people think is going on. It's scary to think that other people have a harder time turning off the unnecessary analysis part of their brain. And, yes, 300 was great in terms of looking cool. Which is exactly what I expect from a film that has probably 15 lines total (not counting the narration). Many of which are some kind of wolf howl. And all of which are rather predictable. Which still doesn't take away from the fact that it's a fun movie to watch. No huge moral, no political subversion... just entertainment. At least as far as I could see, and I'll admit I wasn't looking hard for a hidden message, because clouds of arrows and walls of people are more interesting in their pure, non-allegorical form. (And if I were the sort to really like mostly-naked very buff men, it would've been a very, very awesome movie.)
And, as a general note, I'm still alive, so I'm going to do everything I can to not complain about Friday and Saturday being goshawful evil.
