Alive!
Well... that was a quick two and a half days.
I'm going to try to summarize, but I'm still sort of out of it. Shock of existing in reality again, rather than a physical manifestation of the internet and all that. I have no idea why this didn't occur to me until randomly sitting in the back of the room with
sketchyheart listening to the girls on the panel read that FMA movie in five minutes thing
cryogenia wrote. And it only became more like lurking on
fm_alchemist when it got to discussion. Unfortunately, the community is more entertaining in text form (because then the shouting isn't really shouting you can hear, and you can regulate what you have to listen to). I'm still quite curious about who the girls on the panel were, though. Because I always wonder those things. And by far, the most "holy crap I'm standing in the internet" moment was standing in the hallway with all the 4chan people. They were handing out buttons, I felt oddly out-of-place being in cosplay, had "HEY! WINRY CAME!" shouted at me, and there were people with random 4chan in-jokes printed on signs, and everyone stood around taking pictures of them. (This was ultimately, I think, what got the gathering in trouble, because a security guy came along and yelled at them... someone ended up holding up a sign with Jesus on it and looking pathetic to plead their case. It was... bizarre. Very, very bizarre.)
I didn't take as many pictures as I should have... I have none from Friday, save for those I demand off of other people's cameras (especially the two Hugheses). I was going to glomp every Hughes I saw, but I ended up very confused after a while, because I wasn't sure if I'd seen the same guy twice, and then there was one that passed me in the dealer room about five times that I didn't hug because he was carrying a stick and looked hard to hug. Oh, and there was the one that was dancing with Envy in front of the Spoony Bards. He was hanging out with a group of FMA cosplayers that all ignored me (I vaguely knew their Lust from last year, so she gets forgiven because she was probably distracted, and wouldn't have recognized me), so even though I thought it'd be funny to cut in, I restrained myself.
The FMA cosplayers weren't very fun this year, unfortunately... Every Ed I saw refused eye contact whether I was Winry or Psiren, save for the ridiculous one who stopped me to tell me about how his girlfriend's Psiren cosplay was better. That had to be the most WTF moment of the con, since he went on to talk about how he was responsible for making his girlfriends boobs larger. This was spurred, I think, by the Hawkeye who was with him complimenting my costume. He confused me last year too, though. He's far too tall to be cosplaying Ed anyway. Actually, he's probably the main reason I'm unhappy with the fandom as it was represented at ACen... he's one of two people who actually talked to me. And he was going on, indirectly though not subtly, about how I was too small-chested to cosplay Psiren. What the heck? (It's okay, though, because I'm tough. And he's a nutter.) Not to mention the guy who randomly called me a ninja and played with the floppy ear thingies on my hat. Or the guy who tried to poke me in the stomach while singing when I was dressed as Winry. Or the random guy in the dealer room who stood practically on top of me then grilled me on why I wasn't dressed as Winry in her skirt outfit, because he liked that better, then was really confused when I said that it wasn't as recognizeable and I didn't have a skirt that worked. Anyway... and there was only one Roy who smirked back at me on Saturday. However, there was one adorable Winry cosplayer who had a stuffed Den with automail. She was awesome, and gets all the props I had in store for FMA cosplayers on the grounds that she was nice. And her Den was adorable. Unfortunately, that was Friday and I didn't have my camera.
Anyway, before I got sidetracked... the Hugheses. I think there were four or five total. One of them apparently had an outfit for each day, though I've only got a picture of him in one (on the first day, glomping him...) because someone didn't think it was okay to call me at four in the morning to tell me that he was in the white suit from the DVD cover (okay, I'm not that obsessed, but I also suffer from an intense curiosity. And he made a very good Hughes). On the whole, though, so many of them were in the purple shirts this year it was bizarre. Must be easier to make or something.
Oh, I also have a phone-post recording of Anime Hell, where they showed the Rejected Cartoons. Let me tell you... a room full of what must've been a thousand people all shouting "my anus is bleeding!" is something to be heard. I just have to cut it down and adjust it so you can actually hear it. And find a place to upload it. (Goshdarn my cell phone for not being a good recording device.)
Saturday I took a good number of pictures, though a lot of them were of the Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts photo shoot, because that was the only one I happened to catch. (The FMA fandom is also dead to me because no one told me when the photoshoot was. Every year, even if I already knew when it was, someone told me. Not this year. Probably because they were too busy avoiding eye contact. I don't think I looked menacing or anything...) I'll post the pictures separately once I get around to resizing them. Technically I should be working on a paper now, so... time-consuming internet-related things later. Other than that photoshoot, I only got people who were really random or awesome, which severely limits my pictures. There was an Ivan Ooze, though! (And a few Power Rangers, though I didn't get them.) I'm sort of sad, because I missed the masquerade this year. By 6 or so the line was already snaking around outside below our window, and I didn't feel like standing in it.
solitaryjane had a bit of luck actually sneaking into the line near the front by chance, but in my laziness I got stuck over in the overflow room, and watching masquerade is pretty much no fun on a screen. And when I returned later, there was even a line for that. Which is crazy. On the whole, there had to be... well, a ton more people than last year, I think.
There's a giant part here on Saturday night that involves playing DDR and Dance Maniax (which I'd be addicted to if there was anywhere to play around here... which there isn't, as far as I can tell). And D&D going on in the room until the wee hours of the morning while I tried to sleep. I think I made quite a few half-awake comments. Then woke up randomly once or twice to catch the weirdest bits of conversation. (And
windresistant being tied up.)
And the dealer room was huge. It used to be easy to get lost in, and this year it was impossible not to. I returned with more random things, too. I had no idea the FMA calendars were so huge. I was expecting something that was more of a... normal calendar size? It doesn't bother me at all that it's May and I'm only getting a calendar now because they'll probably get stuck on my walls individually next year or something. Right now, Byakuya is unfortunately dwarfing my Hughes figurine, but that's okay because if he causes any trouble, Vincent can beat him up (at least until I find a way to get him to my sister, since I forgot to send him along back to Ohio... and I had to put him together.) I was aiming to get Urahara (because hatless Urahara! Ah!) but our weighing game resulted in both
solitaryjane and I ending up with the same one. I probably should've told her to take one of the heavier boxes so we'd be sure we at least ended up with two different ones (since she wanted Byakuya), but oh well. He's still pretty even if he's the annoying emo type. I'll just have to train Hughes to defend himself against him. Or find a bigger Hughes. I don't think there's any hope for the clone troopers not having a size complex now. Oh! And I also picked up FMA volume 13 with the playing cards. They make me ever so happy, because all of the facecards are pretty (and I'd forgotten my playing cards, so it was doubly nice because suddenly I had cards I could use with my Psiren costume). And now I own a random volume of FMA in Japanese... and I kind of want to get the rest of them. But that's the sort of thing that'll have to wait. I also got the sticker tape with tiny chibi Roy, Havoc, and Hawkeye on it. I'm not sure what I'll ever use it for, but that doesn't stop them from being adorable there.
And finally... sitting downtown drinking smoothies and watching tourists go by was sort of fun. Mostly because the sun was out and it was warm.
Sadly, I was unable to recruit anyone to friend Pirate!Hughes, mostly on account of not being able to come up with any way to do it other than signs... which are illegal at ACen. Maybe I should randomly post to the forums. I was told that I should cosplay as him next year. Which would be awesome except... um... crossplaying as Hughes. As a pirate. I have this thing where I actually have to pull off looking like the character? And considering I got mistaken for sixteen at least three times at the con, I don't think that'd work... So what I need to do is find someone to con into cosplaying as Pirate!Hughes for ACen '07. It'll be the tenth year. There will be big celebrations. And you will be a pirate for it. You know you want to, random anonymous guy out there (or possibly the Hughes with three outfits from this year. Notice how I asked before I glomped you? That's because I'm a nice person, and I know you want to cosplay as Pirate!Hughes now. Really. People have cosplayed as the recasted!sins and their own fan characters. I think what I need to do for the next year-minus-three-days is make Pirate!Hughes infamous... I'd better get to work.)
P.S. TEN! You are asexual! Stop that!
