Well, that about wraps it up for 2010
Somehow life has just completely eaten me over the past couple of weeks. (I suspect it was the whole holiday thing, plus work has attained a whole different level of nutty, complete with a client that wants my head on a plate but hey, what are you going to do?)
I will eventually come up with a year-in-review post (possibly tomorrow?). But, for now, in case you were looking for something to do between now and midnight, I have some Yuletide recs. I actually had these ones ready a couple of days ago, but I kept figuring I'd get farther in the archives... then I didn't.
So, since we're all capable of going to the archive and sorting by fandom (that is why this ends on a lot of Doctor Who-related recs), I'm going to try to start with the more unusual stuff that people may not have sought out on their own, as well as a few I wouldn't have found if I hadn't stumbled across recs for them myself.
YEAR OF THE MK III SONICARE ULTRASONIC TOOTHBRUSH -- Give me just a moment here to geek out over someone writing Infinite Jest fic. Then a few more for writing meta about fanfic in an Infinite Jest fic. Even if you've never read the book, this is awesome. The theory of first and second order fanfic that gets hinted at is... something I admit to toying with, and could probably write a half-dissertation on.
Sex on a Frozen River Mayhem -- First off: NSFW! I am reccing this because it is the epitome of "Someone thought of that‽" and it deserves every bit of the interrobang. This is Captain Jack Harkness/Mayhem from the Allstate commercials smut. And it... is believable and clever and totally unusual. (Though I'll admit I skipped the dirtiest bits so I really can't form a complete opinion.)
I'm a Free Bitch -- In a different direction on the unusual topics list, there were a lot of Lady Gaga music video fills this year. This one in particular builds an whole fictional world around the Bad Romance video. (Yes... I'm admitting here that I've watched Lady Gaga's videos. It's... at the risk of losing every bit of cred I have, I do think she's a fascinating cultural phenomenon, and insomuch as she is a walking piece of performance art I'm pretty much obligated to like it on some level.)
Guns 'n' Neuroses -- This is another of those "Wait, how did someone actually pull that off?!" fics. It's Frasier and Niles fighting the supernatural in the style of, well, Supernatural, and it's hilarious.
It's the Muppet Doctor Who Special, With Our Very Special Guest Star, Matt Smith! -- Actually, you probably would've read this anyway if you were wandering through the archives. But if the Muppets reenacting the whole history of Doctor Who wasn't enough, it's pitch-perfect and the tongue-in-cheek (and not-so-tongue-in-cheek) meta is absolutely delightful.
Whatever You Want to Call It -- In the same vein as the above, only this is a sequel to Kingmaker, which, I'm guessing, is something most of you haven't listened to (for shame!), but we can fix that later (it's got Shakespeare in, I mean, come on). This fic, er, actually spoils my favorite part of the audio, so go listen to it first and then read this, because it is the best explanation for all those "Who really wrote Shakespeare?" questions.
Happy Hour -- I swear this does it for Who recs. And this one... this is one that I don't think I would've read except I've developed a soft spot for pundit and fake news RPF (I don't even know guys, I don't even know) and this handles Rachel Maddow's search for the mythical Doctor in a very interesting way without ticking my "urgh, it's RPF" squick.
A Terribly Ghastly Silence -- I don't care if I've already rec'd it, I'm reccing it again (plus someone accidentally outed my story in my initial squee post so I had to lock it for now). If you didn't read it last time I rec'd it, here is another chance. It is brilliant and wonderful and I have a completely ungrounded feeling of pride for it, even though I had nothing to do with its actual creation.
What did we learn here? The Who fandom is relentless in its crossovers and will stop at nothing until it eats the whole of fanfiction. Or there are huge swaths of the archive I haven't even touched yet, and probably won't get to for weeks. But hey, if you caught something cool along the way, let me know, because I am tired of trying to wade through the rec posts on the
yuletide community.
And, of course, HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! ♥
