My Porch is not a Cold Dead Place

1) The lemon balm and mint I had last year are sprouting leaves in my back porch planter. I wasn't expecting anything to come back, since I was pretty sure my back porch was deadly for plants. Hooray for being lazy and not pulling things up when they died back last year! (I also have a giant mango seed I want to try to germinate, but I kind of doubt that's going to work out at all.)
2) I have this idea that involves zombies and lately it's been like each brain cell that's thinking of zombies is infecting the nearest cells as well. Within a few days I think my brain will be producing nothing but thoughts about zombies. Oh well.
3) I keep thinking it's Friday because of catastrophic failure at work. My brain has just decided that this week is over, whether the inexorable march of time agrees or not.
4) It seems like another migration to Dreamwidth is underway. I'm probably not going to give up until LJ dies completely (or at least until something other than [community profile] scans_daily shows up on my reading page). But, should we all disappear here, I'm still [personal profile] evilhippo over there. (And I have two invite codes, should anyone need them.)
5) I keep wanting to rewrite my entry from last night so I can compare my 1am style to my 10pm style but... I think I probably have enough writing to do. (There's so much stuff that's missing! But I'm pretty sure you'll all live just fine without extra information about what John Darnielle was wearing and exactly how many people were playing the piano during the encore.)

Lesson Plan

I just wanted to get something down tonight so I can mull it over tomorrow. Suggestions would be fantastic, especially from anyone with a clue about what a lesson plan is really supposed to look like. It just seems too... simple.

Out and About with Prepositions )

Blargh, education.

Bonus: List of probable prepositions for use )

Words I must not use during the lesson presentation, or at any other time )

Magical Art Institute of Chicago

So far, my trips to the Art Institute have gone along themes:

1) With [livejournal.com profile] sketchyheart: mostly sculpture and Asian art, along with Shiva (which I dropped my light meter on). Some wandering through the loop of paintings.
2) With my mom: mostly impressionist art. Did the giant loop of paintings, touched on some American art.
3) By myself: mostly photography, and the medieval weaponry (it's in storage now, so I can no longer show people the Gun Targe and the spearcaneswordgun. Pah!)
4) With [livejournal.com profile] euthymic: Loop of paintings, modern art (which we criticized for fun), and the Dali-Picasso-etc. section.
5) With Joe: Lots of sculpture and cultural pottery, followed by Uncomfortable Furniture Through the Ages. There were even random bits of furniture where there'd never been furniture before, like with the dadaist stuff.

My conclusions are as follows: the Art Institute morphs into completely random things depending on who you're with, occasionally bordering on the completely anthropological; the Art Institute gets larger with every visit (this is less of a revelation given the fact that they just added an entire other wing, but goshdarnit it's not even open yet and there were still dozens of rooms I hadn't ever seen before). Also, note of advice: don't try to get into the museum with a pineapple. It doesn't work.

The Grave Guardian Beast is still my favourite, though. I hope they don't ever put him in storage.

Thorns and Roses

1) This is adorable: • He cherishes family dinner in the White House, where "thorns and roses" is now the favorite family game. Each family member describes the day's highlight, or rose, and the day's worst moment, the thorn. We were told after describing one particularly challenging day at the White House, Malia Obama had this to say to her father the president: "You have a really thorny job."

2) Today's Thorn: CITI'S VOLUNTARY MORATORIUM IS FAKE. I was given the go-ahead today to proceed with pretty much everything, even though most of the people working for Citi haven't been told about this. This now pretty much makes completely FUBARing my department the only purpose of this publicity-stunt moratorium crap.

Today's Rose: Walking down Division St. and then Chicago Ave. for several miles in search of a bakery I had passed once, in the hopes of finding some пампушки (pampushky, or, basically, eastern European jelly donuts made for Fat Tuesday. They're so much better than jelly donuts. Also, rose jelly filling. That is all). Also, the fact that I was the only one in the bakery that had to order in English. I love Chicago's neighborhoods.
